As children we have all been spooked half to death by scary stories. The haunted houses, vicious ghosts and insane psychopaths are all part of the allure of Scariest Books. It is ironic how a book can scare the daylights out of you and yet you can’t seem to put it down. There are plenty of scary books out there but the scariest books are the following:
1. The Shining by Stephen King
With the dazzling number of horror books, Stephen King is an inspiration to all upcoming writers in this genre. The shinning is definitely one of his best work. An alcoholic father takes his family to an isolated mountain resort to focus on his writing while also acting as the resort’s caretaker. After several pages, the creepy begins! With the child’s psychic ability and the father’s dwindling sanity, this book is tailor-made to drive you mad with anticipation and of cores horror. The image of the twin ghost girls will be ingrained in your mind even after you finish reading the book.
2. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
What has a demon possessed young girl, two priests and a detective investigating a homicide? That’s right, it’s the Exorcist by William Blatty. There are supernatural occurrences in plenty. What this book also has in abundance are the questions it raises in our thoughts about evil and the issue of religion. This book will make you battle with demons alongside the characters.
3. The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff
Babies and horror can actually work together as seen in this unique horror story. In this town a baby is taken once in a while from its parents and the baby is replaced by a double. The double is abnormal and usually dies a short while after the replacement. The story is told from the view of a ‘replacement’ that has miraculously survived to be a teenager.
4. The Haunting of Hill house by Shirley Jackson
If the idea of a haunted house has always fascinated you this book will put an end to that. The most enthralling thing about is book is the fact that the reader is kept as uncertain of events as the narrator who is named Eleanor is. The book is about four interesting characters who decide to reside in a haunted house on a hill. The book becomes so intense that you are simply unable to tell the difference between what is real and what is not.
5. The Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
This book is another terror striking masterpiece. Several would-be writers decide to join a writing retreat advertised on the papers. Little did they know the horrors that awaited them at their destinations. The writers are stuck at their destination tell tales that grow horrific as the book proceeds. The writers even murder each other at some point.
6. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Two girls and their uncle remain as the only survivors of a poisoning that claimed the lives of the rest of their family. The town people begin to accuse the remaining Blackwoods of the unfortunate deaths causing the Blackwoods to retreat to an isolated house. They soon realise that the house was a big mistake.
7. The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
Harper Curtis is a different king of serial killer. He has the ability to time travel enabling him to haut his victims’ past making them suffer till he finally kills the victims. The source of his time travelling abilities is a house.
8. The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson
This book is the original of the television thriller Paranormal Activity. It is a totally horrifying tale of moving into a new house.
9. Come closer by Sara Gran
Amanda who is the main character will captivate you with a mixture of insanity, possession and paranormal activity
10. Ghost Story by Peter Straub
Delve into the lives of The Chowder Society who love to tell horrific stories and read as the members start dying one after the other. The truth keeps shifting throughout the book keeping the reader in suspense.
